The President of the Republic of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, has expressed his deep concern for the situation of the hostages captured on the Island of Jolo and has called for humanitarian reasons to prevail over hatred and intolerance.
Any act of unjustified violence against peace-workers of the Red Cross who are in the Philippines to help the local population - among which the Italian citizen Eugenio Vagni- would be strongly condemned by the International Community.
President Napolitano has pleaded for their release without conditions in order to solve peacefully a case which is of great concern for the families of the hostages and for the Italian and international public opinion as a whole.
